Spring Has Sprung in 2021
Changes continue to permeate this world as we move through: businesses closing/opening, unemployment, deaths of loved ones, a new President, vaccines and so on. It has been a mesmerizing dance to watch the adaptability and resilience of individuals amidst it all, myself included.
I was having a conversation the other day about the angst, fears, and worries around the unknowns presented in the future, voicing the growing familiarity of these new times and the continual reminder of ‘anything could change tomorrow’. COVID-19 has shown me that.
Despite the anxiety around the unknowns we face each day, realistically it has always been this way. Meaning, impermanence is a constant and follows the universal law of Law of Perpetual Motion. Last year only brought this truth into the forefront of our consciousness with relentlessness.
On one hand, I witnessed the tremendous suffering that ensued with the grasping and clinging to how life was. It’s hard when we are forced to grow beyond our comfort zone. On the other hand, I found tremendous grounding in a meditation and martial arts practice that is steeped in innovation, resilience, and mindfulness. The ability to live from the Present moment to look clearly at all the ways my ego wanted life to go back to the way it was.
Life hasn’t gone back to the way it was, nor will it. That was then. This is now. And this too will change.
With this truth, maybe it can offer you the spaciousness to be with what is arising and falling away in your life today. When we embrace impermanence, deep gratitude and appreciation arises to meet what is fleeting and will change once again. The ego loves continuity and nothing feels more continuous than pining after a goal that drives us forward in a linear line with clear-cut tasks and to-do’s to accomplish.
Instead of getting rigid or frustrated around things not fitting into that box, give yourself the gift of mindfulness. Pay attention, become aware of where we are clinging and creating suffering so that we can remind ourselves, “we don’t have to live like that anymore.”
